The invention of electric christmas lighting is attributed to an apprentice of Thomas Edison's who constructed the first crude string of lights out of wires and crepe paper.  Of course this new kind of christmas decorating light was not that much safer than the candle wax variety as there was also the danger of the crepe paper catching on fire.
