All you need to create your very own christmas light sculpture is a christmas light string festooned with working bulbs and some kind of armature.  An armature is simply the object that is used to support the design of your christmas light string.  An armature can be two-dimensional or three-dimensional depending on whether or not your intention is to have it hanging or existing as a free standing object on your front lawn.

For instance to create a star for your front door, all you would really need is a wife hanger armature bent to be shaped like a star and wrapped in evergreen boughs.  Your next step would be to wrap a christmas light string around the wire hanger and fix it to your door.  In essence anything can be used for the basis of a christmas light sculpture including bushes that have been trimmed in the shape of reindeer or plastic shell-shaped decorations.  Ice or snow can also be used as armatures for christmas light sculptures.
