The freestanding symbol is usually just a two-dimensional wire armature or plaque that is illuminated by lights. It can also be a dummy of some sort such as a plastic blow up Santa who is made to look like he is stuck in your chimney. Not all Christmas roof decorations come with inbuilt or attached lighting however. Sometimes you might have to light the scene on your own using rope or strands or regular Christmas lights.
